Mercer-Bucks Orthobiologic Institute
The Mercer-Bucks Orthobiologic Institute was created by Rikin Patel, DO and Rick Kleinbart, MD. They envisioned an institute dedicated to the world of orthobiologics. Orthobiologics offers patients cutting edge alternatives to traditional orthopaedic treatments. The idea is to use your body’s own healing mechanisms to accelerate healing and offer solutions to pain relief. Due to its growing popularity, orthobiologics is currently the fastest growing technology in orthopaedics.
Frank Colarusso, DO joins the Mercer-Bucks Orthobiologic Institute as the Director of Prolotherapy.

Platlet Rich Plasma Injection for Hip Pain
November 13, 2016
I am a 59 year old woman who had been having hip pain that had stopped responding to cortisone shots, and was getting increasingly worse and unable to tolerate. At my worst, I was only able to walk a couple blocks before the pain became to intolerable and I would have to stop. I was unable to bear weight on my right hip, and going up and down stairs was almost impossible without leaning on a railing or wall for support. I could not stand for long periods of time, and weight bearing on the hip was intensely painful. An MRI and Arthrogram showed that I had a labral tear and other wear and tear of the hip. I was not a candidate for hip surgery. At Dr. Patel's suggestion, I tried the PRP shot. They took some blood from my arm, spun it down and reinjected the platelets back into the hip. The procedure from beginning to end maybe took 20 minutes, with the injection itself lasting maybe less than a minute. The injection pain was minimal, although it was very sore that day and next. It is now 2 and a half months later, and I am 100% free from hip pain. As a result, I am able to walk easily, go up and down stairs with no assistance, and surprisingly, I have been able to go back to the gym,use the elliptical, bike, do leg exercises to build up the muscles in my legs and hips to help the joint stay strong. If needed, I would do this procedure again without a second thought. I would strongly encourage anyone who can afford the procedure to do it. I am so grateful to Dr. Patel that he suggested and performed the procedure and now I am completely pain free.

Hey Doc - We completed the Blue Ridge Bliss ride on Friday. We rode a total of 334 miles (Fancy Gap, VA to Front Royal), over 6 days with 30,504 feet of elevation gain. I had no problems with my leg except for 1 evening when it was a little sore, which I previously told you about. Other than that I had no other complaints. Again, you did a great job and I am so happy with your services.
Our next big ride is scheduled for Mid-July where we will ride in the Ragbrai ("Ride across Iowa") - approximately, 440 miles-but fewer hills than Virginia.
Hip Labral Injury
January 31, 2014
I am a 16 year old male that acquired a hip injury playing football. I went to Mercer-Bucks Orthopaedics and spoke to a physician regarding PRP injections. After speaking to him, I decided to get Platelet Rich Plasma injections. I received PRP therapy along with 2 weeks of physical therapy. My hip felt better quickly and now my hip is back to 100%. I currently have college coaches recruiting me in the hopes of getting a college football scholarship. MBO and PRP saved my football career.
Acute Hamstring Tear
January 31, 2014
My 15 year old son came to MBO after incurring a soccer related right hamstring injury. After informative consults in the office and much research, our son decided he wanted to try Platelet Rich Plasma Injections. He received his injections at the end of September and was back playing in a college showcase tournament by November. The PRP had incredible results and we are so thankful the physicians at MBO offered us this option to get our son back playing the sport he loves.
